Mockup of Ubuntu Tweak 0.6
November 21st, 2009 | by TualatriX |Although the UI will be changed when the Ubuntu Tweak 0.5 (See the early look of 0.5 ), but we’re planning to do a major change when the 0.6 version. The designer of UTCOM has done a mockup of Ubuntu Tweak 0.6, and here’s some new concept. First let’s see the mockup of Ubuntu Tweak 0.6
How about the new design?
There will a new toolbar to switch between main category of functions, and the sub-functions will locate at the right-sidebar.
Why design like this?
Because the Ubuntu Tweak will support plugin management (The “My Apps” in pictures). As the development going on, I found that there’s always a lot of features need to be developed, why not design a plugin-system to let other developers to develop various kinds of features? So I can focus on the core part, and make Ubuntu Tweak more and more powerful and flexible. That’s the point of Ubuntu Tweak 0.6.
As you see, there’s “Sign in” in the interface, it means Ubuntu Tweak will have full-featured network ability. It is still under discuss.
And the Welcome page will be replaced by some of the status of your system, you can get the overview of your Ubuntu!
OK, just give you a mockup, I still have to make the Ubuntu Tweak 0.5 out at first.
See u soon!

Interesting concept, and the idea of plugins makes it more interesting. I wonder if it can allow kubuntu specific settings from a plugin?

hi tualatrix,
This is your firend Linuxexperte talking. We know each other from launchpad already.
I don’t know, if you know, that a new version of Ubuntu will be out in April 2010. But it is already possible to change to Ubuntu 0.04 (Lucid Lynx, because of its stability). So my question is, will there be a new version fo ubuntu-tweak for Lucid Lynx??
You know, that I love your program so much and I consider it too as a must-have those days.
I hope for a new version for Lucid Lynx (Ubuntu 10.04)
Greetings
your friend

Please, I am not criticizing your work, just trying to help it. Hear me out:
Ubuntu Tweak is the best at doing what it does. It’s perfectly fine right now and would be better if there were more options to change hidden Ubuntu settings.
But now it’s getting its own [social] network and even a plugin system for others to add on to? Come on! This is ridiculous. Why don’t people just suggest features to you?
If this continues, Ubuntu Tweak will one day become so bloated! It has its own version of [Add/Remove Programs...] and [Update Manager] and [Computer Janitor], and soon, who knows, maybe it’ll start managing keyboard settings or sound settings!
Please, I really hope that this will NOT be the final 0.6 and can still be revertible.

I wonder how far devs will go with the plug-ins. could they be used to incorporate other distros? hmmmmmm this could be very interesting, just a question but would you like ubuntu to ship with ubuntu tweak pre installed or even just in the repos without having to add a key?

I can’t wait for the plugin system! I’ve already got a few ideas to implement for that. This program, which is one of the first things I install on every new system, is shaping up very nicely indeed. You have a talent for software design and implementation. Keep up the good work.

Hi.
it seems that Ubuntu tweak is collecting all the “control settings” into a single unit.
This can’t be a bad thing.
Personally I don’t use ubuntu tweak – I am able to do all the things I need with the current settings manager.
However I would be in partial agreement with Exsecrabilus. Concentrate on including those parts that are Kernel / Desktop configuration specific (loading kernel modules, blacklisting etc).
Then allow others to create the “plugins” that will control their specified bit of sofware – I’m thinking a plugin for MySQL administration, or apache / tomcat for example.
Although the current admin facilities for these are fine being able to collect all the pieces in one place is a great idea.
so in brief.
Keep up the good work.
Concentrate on kernel and performance tweaks and monitoring.
Let the community create the plugins for other systems (which is what I think you are suggesting).
Does this lead to an “admin” and a “user” console?
For the moment, as I say above, I don’t use Ubuntu Tweak. But I may have to get it onto my system really soon, just to try it out.

Hi, Many thanks for your words. I will consider to take more kernel/desktop settings. Just after the release of Ubuntu Tweak 0.5.
