What about the status of Ubuntu Tweak 0.5 and the future website?

By this post, I want to talk about something about the development of  Ubuntu Tweak 0.5 and the website, also some of my thoughts.

As you know, for a long time, the development of Ubuntu Tweak focus on the application install, third-party sources and package clean since the year of 2009. There isn’t other major features for Ubuntu Tweak.

There’s several reasons. One important reason is: I have to make features work for Ubuntu since 8.04, because Ubuntu Tweak supports Ubuntu 8.04, 8.10, 9.04 and 9.10.

As a utility to tweak system, make it support so many different versions of Ubuntu spent a lot of time to debug, test and so on: almost the time, I had only one people to do the things.

So as the Ubuntu going on, the development of Ubuntu Tweak became slow too.

Another reason is the personal reason, I have the daily work so that I can only programming in the night or weekends.

I want to make a totally new Ubuntu Tweak with a lot of ideas, so I finally decided, the future of Ubuntu Tweak will only support the current version, so Ubuntu Tweak 0.5 will only work on Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala.

From now on, I don’t have to test with Ubuntu 8.04, 8.10 and 9.04, I just focus on how to make it work with Ubuntu 9.10, and use the newest API of programming to make Ubuntu Tweak more powerful.

Now, in my master development branch,  lots of work has been done, the first is moving from policykit to policykit-1. Policykit-1 is the component of Ubuntu 9.10, it makes the permission control more easily. And through its Python interface, Ubuntu Tweak becomes pure Python application again, there will only be one package, no matter you’re using i386, amd64, or even LPIA.

The second, by the new humanity icon theme, Ubuntu Tweak refreshed its icons of the UI, now it is more “humanity”.

What about the new interface of Ubuntu Tweak?

New navigator and new title of the sub module

ubuntu-tweak-05-preview-01

All native icons

ubuntu-tweak-05-preview-02

Another theme of native icon

ubuntu-tweak-05-preview-03

Of course, it is only a early look of Ubuntu Tweak 0.5, more changes and new things will be happened in the future.

I want the new Ubuntu Tweak will have a easy and quick navigator to the features, refreshed current features and some  cool new features.

The new website is under the development too, and it will be online after the release of Ubuntu Tweak 0.5.

I hope a testing version will come as soon as possible, and I have to say sorry for the people who are still using the old distribution.

OK, enjoy with the Ubuntu 9.10 and Ubuntu Tweak 0.4.9.2! I will come back soon.

There is an * before “New PPA”
Could you explain and provide us with the link to the new Ubuntu-Tweak PPA?

Never-mind. You meant new PPA for other applications.

    Hi TualatriX,

I’m fairly new to the linux world and one thing I would appreciate a lot would be something like a statusbar with the actual commands or a logview where one could see the commands that each and every function uses.

I’m especially interested in the commands you use for the package and kernel cleaning.

Just an idea, and maybe you’ll like it and be able to implement it.

    Thx for a great tool!

first I should say Karmic Koala is not the most perfect distro ever,as I have spent the last week trying to get my sound to work(xfi-xtreme music) trying everything i could think of including fresh install and yet the sound is muddled in static and distortions.

I would highly recommend waiting to update to ubuntu 910. infact i have just fresh installed jaunty as it works better then karmic koala for me(and many many others)
