The first thing after you install Ubuntu
October 12th, 2008 | by TualatriX |Hello folks.
Only three days after Ubuntu Tweak 0.4.0’s release, it has been downloads for 10,000 times!
You can see the DownloadCount here. And the number is still increase.
I’ve made some mistakes so that some people can’t use Ubuntu Tweak 0.4.0, now the problem is solved so if you have any problem with Ubuntu Tweak, Please update from the repository.
Okay, at this post, I want to know the frist thing after you install Ubuntu.
—–
First I tell you what is the first thing after we Chinese people do after install Ubuntu. The thing isn’t install Ubuntu Tweak, it’s edit the sources.list.
Yes, the sources.list by default isn’t suitable for us, because the source is slow to connect and update. We need to edit it to use our own source, so the update of Ubuntu will be fast.
What’s purpose I ask you this question? Because I want to add a feature to edit sources.list easily.
My idea is:
- Recommend the best source to users(according users’ language), users can simply finish editing the source by just select and confirm.
- Provide a text view to let users freely edit the sources.list, they won’t need to run: sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list.
- When finish editing the source, users can invoke the Update Manager to continue system’s update.
Do you need this feature? No matter what, I’m always doing the same step after I install Ubuntu. So are other Chinese people.
So, if you need this feature, and you need to use a source that doesn’t included in the Ubuntu’s Update Manager. Please post your country(or language code, such as en_US) with your sources here, so that I can collect them together.
This feature will be added in the Ubuntu Tweak 0.4.1, if things goes well, it will be released soon!

Good idea TualatriX, after I install Ubuntu, I go into my Software Sources and I get it to select the best server for me to download the updates from.

That would be great! I’m in the Philippines but I am a relative newbie and do not know the right sources that I should have. Still since we are both in Asia and not quite far maybe we can also use the sources/ repositories that are not included in the default, that you add.
Thanks again !!!!

随便挑几个典型的不就行了,做个选择列表供选择不是很好吗?

In German Ubuntu, the German Ubuntu servers are chosen right by the setup. However I every time select a sub mirror from one of the universities – there are a little faster and the burden-sharing is so fairer.

Hello would you consider adding an option for ubuntu tweak regarding change of lock-screen-saver theme?

Thank you so very much for this. I wanted to have some icons on the desktop so badly and I didn’t want to put symbolic links there either.
You really made my day!

I notice a bug with gOS 3 and Ubuntu Tweak. When I try to clean my packages and Cache, I enter my password, and it gets rejected. I’ve entered several times, the password isn’t excepted.

An update on what I reported yesterday. You can’t enter you password anywhere (you can, but it won’t be accepted) on Ubuntu Tweak running on gOS 3.

Hey there, thanks for making this great app I’ve been using it since 0.3 I think.
When I first saw the new Option for changing the panel logo I thought wow great, now I don’t have to do that by hand anymore, but then I noticed it’ll only let me change the icon to a 24×24 pix image…why is that?
I’ve always been changing it to a smaller image so I can reduce the height of my panel to 20px …I think you should allow smaller icons here too.

The first thing I install after ubuntu is: ubuntu-tweak. Then I set desktop fonts for LCD screen, then wine-doors, qemu, and some google programs.
Thanks for your work.

The first thing I make is to setup my ATI video card and my Broadcom wireless card. Then, I like to install some services like samba and ssh for just before stopping these services from automatically booting every time since a I sporadically use them.

I would like to give a suggestion: to include the option backup/restore evolution e-mail client, since this software has a very good implementation of a backup feature able to backup everything so when you reinstall you don’t need to worry about reconfiguring your account since you just need to start the application and show the path for the compressed backup image.

In the compiz section add an option to make the magic lamp waves min to 1 for re-enabling the genie effect. right now there are lot of steps to do that. The effect is patented by apple I think. thats why the default value is three.

I’m slightly confused. Aren’t these three ideas you describe available in the Software Sources application?
After I do a new install I load Software Sources.
Click on the “Download from:” drop down and select “Other…”.
On the new dialog I click “Select Best Server” and it runs through it’s database of mirrors pinging them.
It then sets the best responding server in the sources.lst.
I’m based in china myself and find that currently the mirror.lupaworld.com is the best. Although this does vary.

Ohhh, I think I see.
You’re talking about using sources that aren’t included in the Ubuntu mirror database.
My only concern here is that means using an unoffical mirror which could end up not having the latest updates or could end up serving bad packages.
Just a thought.

How about displaying a list of popular sources, sorted by category and with the repository name and a description. The user can then tick the checkbox to add the source, or untick it to remove the source. Kind of like Add/Remove Applications.
