Improved version: Ubuntu Tweak 0.3.5 released!
July 29th, 2008 | by TualatriX |If you like Ubuntu Tweak 0.3.4, You’ll more like this one: 0.3.5 is coming!
Ubuntu Tweak 0.3.5 improved the Latest two features: Add/Remove and Third Party Sources.
—–
After the 0.3.4’s release, Ubuntu Tweak got the most responses and downloads ever. This means that more and more people like Ubuntu Tweak and the new features is what they want.
But there’s some lack of this version, in order to make the new features more stable and useable. I spent some time to enhance them. So Ubuntu Tweak 0.3.5 comes.
Here’s the Changlog:
- Many interface improves
- Third Party feature now support GPG Key automatic import.
- Added more third party sources and applications.
- Added the support of Linux Mint.
- Power Manager added an option to go back normal.
Some details:
I plan to make an redesign of the interface. So I start to do a little work by every release. You’ll see Ubuntu Tweak’s change gradually.
And some guys told me that they can’t use the new features under the Ubuntu based distributions(especially Linux Mint), now I open it to the Linux Mint.
OK, now I’ll show you the latest “Add/Remove” and “Third Party Sources”, here’s the screenshots.
You can see the interface has been redesigned. And thanks I’ve added some new sources he provided, I think many people will like it. They’re Opera, Skype, PlayOnLinux and so on.
By default, Ubuntu has no source for Opera and Skype. Now You can easily install them through Ubuntu Tweak, and always follow the latest version. Just enable the sources, and install them through Ubuntu Tweak’s Add/Remove.
They’re the official sources, so it’s reliable to use.

Any chance of removing the massive ‘ubuntu tweak’ banner from the main window? How does it aid usability?

That’s a known bug:

Your program is the reason I started to use Ubuntu. You are doing a great job making it easier and painless to install the most commonly used software on Ubuntu. One request I do have is that include the opyions to install flash support, add the codecs and decoders to play DVDs out of the box, and add support for wma and microsoft fonts. Then your program would to be truly ass-kicking.

i am eager to try it. let me try and surely post the comments. anyway congrats for your work.

I would really like a way to view the repository link for the third-party applications. The only way I can do it currently is to enable it in Ubuntu Tweak, then open up Software Sources. It takes a lot of time, as you know, and I would like for Ubuntu Tweak to somehow show the direct link to the PPA. Another related feature is a link to the third-party project website so I can find out more about the program, instead of just Googling it. Other than that, great release and keep up the great work!

I used the Startup->Session Control->Automatically save changes for session and I had Thunderbird and Nautilius open when I first shut down.
Now I Untick and still, Evolution and Nautilius open. Cant get rid of this option and back to a normal Start-up. Also, on ocassions no Desktop Icons are shown and Gnome-Desktop does not work.

@ Megafan
To get most of what you want, just install “Ubuntu Restricted Extras” from Ubuntu’s Add/Remove or via Synaptic Manager.

i agree with that.
i commented about the rollup option not working, it is actually working with clicks but not on mouse wheel, so the porblem is probably not ubuntu-tweak related… but if anybody has an idea.. i’ll be glad to hear it..
great app anyway, saves a lot of time now on installing apps, don’t need to fill again all the repositories for 3rd party apps.

im trying to fix this with # in the ubuntu-tweak.py
but not solve the problem…
the program shows a splash image for 1 second and no more…

Very nice work, and very useful, this ubuntu-tweak.
I thought it’d be nice to have a feature to export the installed programs to a file, so in case of a re-installation or installation on another machine we could easily install/re-install them.
Thks

Holy shit dude, that’s such a good idea. Why didn’t anybody think of that before?
By TualatriX on Aug 3, 2008 | Reply
@Exsecrabilus, your idea is cool. I can have a try!
@An jimmy, another good idea. Thanks.
@felipe yensen, it’s a bug of Ubuntu Tweak, maybe your system font size is smaller than 10pt, isn’t it? You can edit the /usr/share/ubuntu-tweak/Widgets.py, and delete the CairoDraw class. It will solve the problem.
@Mariano Pelizzari, hmm. It seems helpful when to re-install system.
@SerP, if you’re using Ubuntu 8.04, you can edit /usr/share/ubuntu-tweak/MainWindow.py, modify the line to DISABLE_HARDY = False
By felipe yensen on Aug 4, 2008 | Reply
thanks, i change my fonts to 10pt
and solve the problem.
i use 8,5pt normally in system font size..jeeje
thank you!!!

for some reason, on this version, I cannto unlock 3rd party software section, even if I start UT from sudo, in a terminal.. just sayin….

A truly great program which keeps on improving with each version! I wish the Ubuntu developers would include it by default in the System > Preferences menu, because it deserves to be there!!!

roll up option with mousewheel doesn’t work when i disable compiz?… isn’t it supposed to be part of metacity? (i have metacity compositing enabled gives me less trouble than compizfusion)

How about adding XBMC ppa?
It have frequent performance updates, I think it will be useful. Thanks
https://edge.launchpad.net/~team-xbmc/+archive
By mkx on Aug 20, 2008 | Reply
also how about codeblocks? It’s not available from the official repositories. And it’s a bit not straight forward as it requires two “sets” of packages.
Thanks
By TualatriX on Aug 21, 2008 | Reply
@rico
Yeah. I think it’s a Compiz supported feature. So you need to enable Compiz to use roll up.
@mkx
Thanks. XBMC is good! Add it next release.
codeblocks is available in my repositoriy. Its version is 8.02.
Have you tried other sources?

Recently I’ve been having problems with the latest version on 4 different computers. When I go to the third party applications and try to unlock. I enter the password and it freezes up there. I can proceed no further and must force close U-T. When I first installed the program, it worked fine. Now adding 3rd party repos is broke. Advice please…
By lx on Sep 8, 2008 | Reply
you may find the 3rd party depository in your sourse.list btw some of the softwares are not so good as in default depository. There’s substitution e.g the chm reader

I think you should decide what you want this app to do. Right now, it seems to be headed for major bloat.
If you link up [enabling who-knows-what-PPAs] with [what Gtweakui does and some related stuff], you might as well support all config options in all applications in Ubuntu repos.
I think you should stick to tweaking user settings, not adding repos. That is Synaptic’s job.
PPAs are not safe, they are just hosted on Launchpad. Period.
I’m sorry to say, I can not encourage people I know to take advantage of this application anymore. It is just getting out of hand.
By Khaled Hussein on Sep 11, 2008 | Reply
I partially have to agree with Ketil. The focus of the application was tweaking user settings, which I think is pretty useful for Ubuntu beginners or those that would rather use GUI. Therefore, I think that it would be more beneficial if you focus on that.
However, I’d definitely still recommend this application for Ubuntu beginners that I know (not a whole lot though). I still think that it is a pretty cool app.
Good job.

Just a note, the latest version doesn’t work in xubuntu (8.04), I tried removing the CairoDraw class from Widgets.py and now it fails with the following error:

I like the banner – don’t remove it. However you may want to make it just a little bit smaller. Otherwise good job- keep up the great work.
