Ubuntu Tweak 0.3.4 released!

After a month that Ubuntu Tweak 0.3.2′s release, I’m proud to announce that the new version of Ubuntu Tweak: 0.3.4 relesed!

This isn’t a milestone release, but it has been introduced the PolicyKit mechanism. So in the upcoming 0.3.x series, Ubuntu Tweak will have more “Tweak” features.

—–

Now let’s see what does Ubuntu Tweak 0.3.4 look like.

Faster launch

I’ve optimized the code of Ubuntu Tweak, now it has a faster launch speed than before.

As a reflection of it, You’ll see a “wait” screen when you select one item at the first time. But the time is short, you’ll ignore it.

Simple Add/Remove

Ubuntu Tweak has now a simple interface to add/remove applications. It is like Ubuntu’s Add/Remove, but it is fewer applications, only the widely used applications displayed. The category is resorted, it will faster to find what application you are looking for.

Third Party Software Sources

With this feature, you’ll never to modify the sources.list.

Add a sources for an application, you’ll always follow the latest version of an application.

Of source, when you want to follow Ubuntu Tweak’s release, just check it like the screenshot.

Thanks a lot. But the .deb has some fault , the program keeps on crashing http://www.imgx.org/files/19124_5g1nq/Screenshot.png

  13. Shashwat says:

Yes the problem is with .deb . .Installed from source and worked fine :)

  14. Vadim P. says:

Er, where does ubuntu tweak install the programs from?

Can’t be any repositories I’m using, because it claims that several programs aren’t installed while they really are.

  15. Vadim P. says:

Thinking about it, this is a bad, bad idea. It’ll bring the same thing Automatix did – unhappy users when the software doesn’t work, unhappy developers when users report bugs for broken packages that were *not* made by Ubuntu but some third-party source, and developers unable to fix them. Unhappy users that the said developers can’t fix the problems.

  16. Lee Jarratt says:

    @ Vadim P.

Hmmm, most of the Ubuntu Userbase like the new features in 0.3.4 and you are the only person I’ve seen that has provided negative feedback on Ubuntu Tweak. I guess, if you don’t like some features, then don’t use them ^_^

If packages are broke etc, I’m sure TualatriX will fix the problems in the next release.

    Good day Sir,
    Lee

  17. TualatriX says:

    @ Vadim P.

Hmm. I think The Automatix had ever brought some bad experiences to you.

Ubuntu Tweak won’t do the same thing.
Because the Add/Remove interface is just an another wrapper of Ubuntu’s Add/Remove. They invoke the same API: the Synatic.

About the “Third Party Sources”, the sources in Ubuntu Tweak are all coming from Launchpad PPA.
Launchpad is the develop center of Ubuntu, The packages in Launchpad is compatible to Ubuntu.
It is the safest third party sources.
And I can say, PPA Sources isn’t the “Third Party Sources”. Because all the Ubuntu packages will first be uploaded from PPA sources.

So it’s safe to use Ubuntu Tweak’s new feature.

  18. Vadim P. says:

    Which PPA is it?

Anyone who wants can make a PPA, and they can make an open-source virus if they wanted to and release it under the GPL. It would still break the computer!

I’ve noticed a bug/incompatibility with the software installation features: i run Linux Mint Elyssa, which is based on Hardy Heron. Yet when i choose either of the options under “software”, i am told that this feature is only enabled in Ubuntu 8.04. True, i may not be running 8.04, but Linux Mint 5 is essentially the same thing!

  25. Will says:

When you enable wine source you get:

W: GPG error: http://wine.budgetdedicated.com hardy Release: The following signatures couldn’t be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 58403026387EE263

Ouch, no way round this? I just ignored it of course. ;)

Also when enabling sources Unbuntu Tweak grays out for a good 30 seconds, I thought it locked up.. Perhaps a loading screen or something showing user progress after enabling the sources?

And what about http://packages.medibuntu.org/ as a third party source?

Crap, I choose to hide desktop icons and then turned them back on but desktop is still blank.. oh no.. :(

  26. war59312 says:

Sweet, desktop icons came back on their own after opening trash. hehe Strange bug..

So, I take it I have to have Gnome installed?

  29. Lee Jarratt says:

    @ Jim,

Yes, you will need GNOME installed in order to be able to run Ubuntu Tweak. Even if you somehow managed to get Ubuntu Tweak to install, the tweaks would be useless as they are GNOME Specific tweaks etc.

Which PPA is it? How can I know it’s safe? What if they make a broken version of the x server, and after updates, I’m screwed?

  33. Star says:

I get an “Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: phyton-gconf” :-(

  34. Lee Jarratt says:

    @ Star,

Try searching for Python-gconf in the Synaptic Package Manager and installing it, then try installing Ubuntu Tweak again.

    Hope this helps,

    Lee Jarratt

  35. Respawner says:

    Very nice tool.
    Thanks for your work :-)

  36. venik212 says:

When I click on it after installation, nothing happens….

  37. Ketil says:

    @Tualatrix:
Like Vadim is saying, a PPA is not in any way a guarantee that the packages will be safe.
By all means, let users modify their soruces.list, but do not pretend that non-official repos are safe.
If you want this included in official Ubuntu, you’ll not be able to put this in by default.
